RANO RAU

RANO RAU is an unusual volcanic crater wetland at the west end of Rapa Nui. Its microclimate creates ideal conditions for flower diversity and the growth of native species naturally. Its sides provide shelter from wind and the salinity of the sea, in addition to keeping it safe from humans, cattle and fire. And it's a visual jewel!

VISITOR CENTER
ORONGO is the ceremonial village located outside the western rim of the crater.  At one time there were 54 stone houses here which were used temporarily each year for the annual religious competition for power on the island. Birds are important on remote islands, and were central to Rapa Nui cultural and religious life.

The three islets of the Birdman Competition

The competition occurred in July when all the clans chose their strongest males to compete to become "Birdman".  After climbing up to Orongo, the participants had to descend the 300 foot cliff down to the shore, and swim to the furthest island. They could use a totora fiber raft, or float as the 1/2 mile journey traversed strong currents and sharks. Those who arrived at the furthest island then had to wait there, sometimes days, sometimes weeks. They were waiting for the birds to come to the island, nest, and lay eggs. The purpose of the competition was to secure an egg of the frigate bird, attach it to one's head and swim back to the shore of Rapa Nui, climb the 300 ft. cliff to Orongo and present his chief with the egg - unbroken! Then that clan was the proud possessor of "power" for the next year. There were often fights and skirmishes among the competitors, and some years few returned alive.  For more details on this ritual, feel free to Google it!

Birdman Carvings

This is the tip of the proverbial iceberg, (Pun intended) when it comes to Rapa Nui's culture. I do hope this teaser encourages you to explore more of the subject.
See you next month!
