SYLVIA PATTON - 2019 - 2021 - CALENDAR EXTRAS

     CANYON DE CHELLY (pronounced DE-SHAY) NATIONAL MONUMENT  is March's destination, and it's a wonderful one at that! Located in the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona it can be viewed from the rim, or accessed via the valley floor. There are actually three canyons. Visitors can only travel the canyons accompanied by a park ranger, or an authorized Navajo guide. In the canyons are ruins and petroglyphs of the Anasazi, and this is one of the longest continuously inhabited landscapes of North America. Truly worth a visit. My visit was in February, so some of the canyons were snowed in, but I was able to traverse the main canyon.                                                                                        ...

       Both January and February's images were taken on the road into Zion National Park.  Also, as you continue east you travel through Bryce Canyon National Park as well. This time of year is a great time to visit. No one else is there! Well, maybe that's different now, with Covid. Still, I'm sure less people than during the rest of the year.                                                                   END OF 2021 CALENDAR - JANUARY 2022       Water sculpts the ice that is released from the toes of glaciers as they break off into the water. These icebergs then get further sculpted as they are tossed on the waves of the ocean. Above is an up close and personal look into the "mouth" carved into this iceberg.                 Sorry this is so late, but I got distracted by getting the 2022 calendar printed. It is always an adventure! For the many years I have been doing this, I can count on the fingers of one foot the number of times there were no issues. I mean how complicated can it be? Still, the good news is the new calendar is in the mail! I am pleased with it :-)) I hope you will be too!          The above image was captured from the second story balcony of the Kona condo of my step-daughter, Stacey. Because the balcony is so high, I was able to be at the level of the top section of the palm trees in the garden. Hence, the gecko among the lace of the palm tree. I love the Hawaiian geckos! They are so colorful, and they eat mosquitos!! Here are some other views from that balcony.                                         ...

  This image was captured on a zodiac cruise in the Chilean fjord of Seno Garibaldi.  The ship was traveling south through Tierra del Fuego via the Beagle Channel. While the truly spectacular sight is the impressive glacier at the end of the fjord, the journey along the fjord was filled with unusual rock formations and bird colonies. Truly a delightful outing.                                                                                  DEATH VALLEY  Death Valley National Park is an amazing place, and one of my favorites. It's immense, sparsely visited, and lonely - with signs of human interaction few and far between. I love it! At Badwater you stand at 282 feet below sea level. As you look across the valley at the Panamint mountain range, you see Telescope Peak at over 11,000 feet in altitude. There are a variety of weird and other worldly land formations throughout the Park. Below this month's "other images" you will find my Calendar for 2009. That will give you a wider look at some of my favorite places in Death Valley. Now is a great time to think about giving the Death Valley a visit!...

                          This month's image is a color image from the Palouse, in Eastern Washington state.                              In the fall of 2014 my friend, Rick, and I spent some time in Eastern Washington. We photographed an interesting geological area called the Scablands, and the wheat fields of the Palouse. This area is America's bread basket, with miles and miles of wheat fields covering the rolling hills. It's colorful in the spring, turns from green to golden, and then is harvested in the fall. As the interest to me is line and form, this area was perfect to shoot in infrared.
